Contemporary Metalpoint
Introducing the metalpoint artwork of D. Lammie-Hanson, who has reinterpreted and mastered a medieval technique called silverpoint. Inspired by the metalpoint drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, Jan van Eyck, and Albrecht Dürer, she was struck that Black people were absent from these works and became curious to see how Black skin would present itself in metalpoint.
Using metalpoint in wire form as both her tool and her medium, Lammie-Hanson creates imagery of monumental scale on dark, deep surfaces, where the precious metal reflects light and emphasizes shadows, enhancing the dimensionality and intensity of her subjects.
Her work celebrates individuals and communities of color, particularly the Black community, portraying their beauty, dignity, and resilience with the same intention, sensitivity, and dedication to vulnerability found in the masters of the past. Through self-teaching, she has developed a stunning body of work that transforms this historic medium into a contemporary expression of power, identity, and collective memory.
